Taking Shakespeare to India by Artistic Director, Philippa Vafadari

I’ve just returned from an inspiring trip to India working with Q Theatre Productions (our co-producers on Mind Walking (2013).  It was great to meet up with Torel, Q and the QTP team again.  They provided the workshop space for me to work with 8 incredible actors on a ‘scratch’ draft of a new play, based upon Macbeth.  We explored the text physically and vocally. The vocal input was from my artistic collaborator, Ariana Vafadari, who is currently touring India with her new album ‘Gathas, Songs My Father Taught Me’ (www.arianavafadari.com).

The actors were all experienced and talented performers from theatre, television and film.  They threw themselves into the workshops and were creative and open to what I offered.  Since coming back I have written a ‘scratch’ draft of the play ‘Macbeth – Behind closed doors’ which I hope to develop further. The piece uses filleted text from the Shakespeare interwoven with physicality and song.  It investigates the things we don’t see in the play – what happens offstage – storms, murders and suicides.  The things that occur ‘behind closed doors’.  This phase of the project was funded by a small grant from Arts Council England and the British Council.  It has developed my practice as a writer and director.  I am hoping to return to India in 2019 to research the piece further.  Watch this space…
